The application process is fairly simple and straightforward, and it does not require any tests or gun courses. All applications, according to state law, must be approved or declined within a specified time period.

Go to the sheriff's department, which is at the Lackawanna County Courthouse, 200 N. Washington Ave., first floor, in Scranton. Take with you $25 for the application fee (as of 2010), a passport-style photo and identification, such as a driver's license.

Request a gun license application at the counter.

Fill out the application. It will ask personal information such as name and address as well as your driver's license number and other items such as personal references that will help with a background check. Pay the fee and give the completed application to the clerk at the counter. The fee is to offset the cost of running the background check.

Go back to the sheriff's department when you are notified that you have been approved to pick up your license. If an issue arises with your application, the department will let you know. If you have been convicted of a felony or are on probation, your application will be denied. The office has 45 days to approve or deny the application.
