How to Shutdown a PC from Remote Desktop

"Remote Desktop Connection" in Windows is an application that allows a network administrator to remote control another computer on the network. The remote computer's desktop is shown in a terminal window on the administrator's local machine. This is beneficial for administrators who need to configure and manage several computers on a large, enterprise network. The "Shutdown" button is not available from a terminal window, so administrators must use alternative methods to shutdown the computer from a Remote Desktop Connection window.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and then click "Programs." Select "Accessories" and choose "Remote Desktop Connection." This opens a connection configuration dialog box.

    • 2

Enter your remote computer's name and click "Connect." When you make the connection, enter your user name and password to log into the remote machine.

    • 3

Click on the remote desktop, hold the "Alt" button, and press "F4" on your keyboard. This opens a window with the option to shutdown or restart a computer. Click the "Shutdown" button to turn off the machine. The terminal window automatically closes when the remote computer shuts down.
