Tutorial for Scanning 35 Millimeter Negatives

Photos that were taken with 35mm film cameras have negatives provided with the developed photos which are used to make reprints if they are ever needed. If you have negatives of old 35mm photos, you can convert them to into digital files by using a scanner. Many scanners, such as those from Canon and HP, have the capability to scan old negatives that can be saved to a file or printed as a new photo.

Instructions

      Insert the installation disc for the scanner into the CD/DVD drive. Wait for the Installation Wizard to appear and then follow the instructions to install the software.

      Connect your desktop or laptop to the scanner with the USB cord that comes with the scanner. Plug one end of the cable into the scanner and the other into a USB port on the computer. Wait for the operating system to recognize the new device.

      Apply a small amount of glass cleaner to a cloth and wipe down the glass on the scanner. This will provide the best possible image.

      Open the lid for the scanner and then take off the cover for the transparent materials adapter. Place the template to use with the negatives on the surface of the scanner.

      Insert the negatives that you want to scan into the template. An icon on the template will indicate the proper placement of the negatives.

      Align the arrow in the upper left or right corner of the template with the arrow or mark on the bed of the scanner. The mark on the scanner will also be in the upper left or right corner.

      Close the lid of the scanner and then press the "Scan Film" button on the scanner. If you are using the software installed on your computer click the "Scan Film" option.

      Save the scanned negative to your computer to complete the process.
