How to Stop the Programs Start Menu from Popping up When the Mouse Moves over It

The Windows "Start Menu" is your access to the Internet, your programs, and your documents and files. You use it to run commands, conduct searches and access system settings. With such frequent use, it's important that your "Start Menu" be customized to your liking. While many features, such as the mouse-over notification for programs in your menu, can make for ease of use, you could also find them to be a nuisance. Fortunately you can easily disable them.

      Right-click on the "Start Menu" button and select "Properties."

      Choose the "Start Menu" tab from the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window that pops up.

      Click on the "Customize ..." button. The "Customize Start Menu" window will open.

      Scroll down to the program that displays information when you mouse over it. The folders "Computer," "Control Panel," "Documents," "Downloads," "Games," "Music," "Personal Folder" and "Pictures" can be edited to no longer display subfolders. If using Windows 7, you can also edit the "Recorded TV" and "Videos" folders. Select "Display as link" for each program that you wish to edit. This will remove the display menu on hover ability.

      Click "OK," if using Windows 7. Click "OK," "Apply," then "OK," if using Windows Vista.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also remove programs from the right pane in your "Start Menu" by navigating to the "Customize Start Menu" box and selecting "Don't display this item" for each program that you wish to remove.
