The website of the Advisory Committee to the Congressional Internet Caucus says Alan E. Bell, the vice president of technical operations at Warner Bros., unified the invention of the DVD in 1995. Before that, movies came on VHS tapes. VHS tape covers came off easily, but rewinding the tapes took a long time. Digital scene finding makes DVDs more convenient, but the task of removing that first DVD cover puzzles many people. Games come on DVDs as well, sometimes with a CD-style cover.

  1. Opening Movie-style DVD Covers

      Hold the DVD cover in your right hand, oriented so that you can read the title. With your right thumb, hold the bottom lip of the indentation on the right side.

      Open the cover with your left hand by gripping the top lip of the indentation with your left thumb.

    • 3

      Press on the button in the center of the DVD until it clicks. Now, remove the DVD.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the plastic wrapper before you try to open the DVD cover.

  • Score the sealing tape by running the point of a knife or scissors down the groove that runs along the top, bottom and right side of the DVD cover.

  • Only touch the edges of the DVD, or oil from your hands can make it not play correctly.
