1
Try on your Jansport backpack and adjust all the straps to give you a good idea of where it is comfortable before adding any items to the backpack.
-
2
Start packing the backpack with the heaviest objects first. Place any cans (although packing a lot of cans is not ideal) at the bottom of the Jansport backpack. Place the remainder of your food on top of any cans keeping the weight evenly distributed.

3
Enclose your clothing in plastic zipper bags. Use large bags for shirts and pants and smaller size bags for socks and underwear. Pack the clothing on top of the food items.
-
4
Use the pockets on the sides of the Jansport backpack to pack your smaller items that you may need to get to in a hurry. Pack the side pockets with a knife, matches, flashlight and granola bars. Pack a small rain poncho in one of the side pockets as well in case of inclement weather.
-
5
Attach any cooking items using straps on the sides of the backpack if they will not fit inside the backpack. Keep these items lightweight, small and to a minimum.
-
6
Use the straps at the underside of the Jansport backpack to secure your sleeping bag. Wrap the straps around the bag and tighten it down as much as possible to keep the bag from slipping out during the hike.
-
7
Fill a water filter pack with water from your tap before you leave for the hike. Attach the water filter pack to the side of your Jansport backpack if your particular pack has this feature. Thread the straw for the water filter pack through the holes designated for this purpose.
-
8
Try on your backpack again to make sure it is still comfortable. Arrange any items if necessary inside the Jansport backpack if something is uncomfortable. Bounce up and down slightly on the balls of your feet to check the weight of the backpack and make sure it is not too heavy for you to carry and the weight is evenly distributed.

Tips & Warnings
Use the zipper bags for dirty or wet clothes later on to keep them away from everything else in your Jansport backpack and protect items from moisture and plain old stink.
Think lightweight and small when packing your Jansport backpack. Do not bring a lot of canned food. One or two canned items is okay. The same goes for clothes. Plan on wearing pants for two or three days. Socks are probably the most important item for comfort--bring extra.
