How to Make a Wood Stand
Wood is a versatile product. With the right tools, you can cut it, shape it or mold it to make almost anything you want. When you want to make a wood stand, it can be as simple as a square piece of wood atop four legs that are nothing more than 2-by-4-inch studs cut to length. Build a box from wood, set a plant on it and it becomes a wooden plant stand. The possibilities are endless, limited only by your drive and imagination. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place the four 30-inch pieces of lumber (legs) on a worktable. Measure from one end and make a mark at six inches. Put the carpenter's square on the mark and draw lines across the width of the legs. Place an 'X' on top of the line.

Next, make a mark two inches from the other end and draw a line across it as before. Put an 'X' just beyond the line. Mark this end of the legs as the top. These lines indicate the location of the crosspieces.

Drill a 1/8-inch hole 3/4-inch from the ends of the 1-by-2-by-11 1/2- inch pieces (crosspieces). Stand the crosspieces on their long edges and drill a 1/8-inch hole through the width of the lumber 1 1/2 inches from the ends.

Apply glue on the 'X' side of the lines on the legs. Put the crosspieces on the 'X' side of the lines. Insert a 1 1/4-inch drywall screw into each hole drilled and secure the crosspieces to the legs. Clean up the excess glue with a damp cloth.

5
Put some glue on the top edge of the crosspieces. Hold one of the two 1-by-12-by-11 1/2-inch shelves against the edge. Secure it with two-inch drywall screws through the holes drilled in the crosspieces. Repeat this with the other shelf and then secure the other legs to the shelves in the same manner. Clean up the glue as before.
