How to Play the .AVI Format in Quicktime
A number of video playing applications can play the very common AVI file format, including Apple's QuickTime. QuickTime is a video player available for Mac OS X and Windows PC computers. QuickTime is included in the OS X operating system and available as a free download for the Windows operating system.

Open QuickTime from the "Applications" folder on a Mac or from the "Programs" menu of a PC.

Click on the "File" menu and select "Open File."

Navigate to the location of the AVI file using the "Open" window. Click on the files so it appears highlighted and press the "Open" button.

Click the "View" menu and select the size in which the video should play. You can adjust this at any point during the video.

Press the play button in the center of the video window. It is a large, single triangle pointing right.
