Making Windows Media Player your default music player means it'll automatically play music you open.

Windows Media Player is a digital music program from Microsoft. It can play a number of music and video file formats, as well as allowing you to burn CDs and make playlists. If you make Windows Media Player your default music player, whenever you download and open a music file from the Internet or open a music file from a folder on your computer or an external hard drive, it will automatically play in Windows Media Player.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open Windows Media Player.

    • 2

Click the "Tools" menu and choose "Options."

    • 3

Click the "File Types" tab. You will now see a list of file types.

    • 4

Click the boxes of all the music file types so there is now a check mark in the box. The music file types will have "music" or "audio" in the name, such as "Windows Media Audio file (wma)" and "Music CD Playback." If you see a box that is dimmed, that means Windows Media Player only has partial ownership of the file type, which means it cannot play all extensions of the file type by default. To give full ownership, click the box until it becomes un-dimmed, which usually means clicking it once, then click it again if necessary to put the check mark in the box.
