How to Improve Internet Download Speed
Having a slow Internet connection can be very frustrating, especially when you're really trying to download something important. Sometimes, even the browsing speed slows down and you don't know how to fix it. First you should know that your Internet connection is the most important factor in determining Internet speed. Second, there can be some trouble with the location of your Internet equipment. Other problems might be related to the computer's software, which can easily be fixed to optimize your computer's download speed.

1
Contact your Internet service provider and inquire about your current Internet connection package. Ask about the download speed you're paying for.
-
2
Test your Internet connection speed to make sure the speed you're paying for is the speed that is programmed in your ISP's network. This can be accomplished by using a speed testing website like the ones in Resources. You simply go to the website, click on "Start test" and the website will show you the computer's download and upload speed. The speed should be close to the figures quoted by your ISP. If not, contact your ISP again and tell them the speed is slow and the problem needs to be fixed.

Stay close to the access point. If you use wireless Internet, you should know that your computer's proximity to the router or wireless access point hardware is very important. Physical obstructions like furniture can negatively affect your Internet connection's speed, so make sure you keep the computer somewhere close to the Internet's equipment, and steer clear of all the obstructions.

4
Disable your Web browser's add-ons. Internet Explorer 8 shows a column that tells how long each add-on takes to load each time you open a new tab on the browser. To access this column for checking the slow add-ons, go to "Tools" from the menu and click on "Manage Add-ons."
Now compare their speeds and disable the ones you don't particularly use and are slowing down the Internet. This might improve your Web browsing and download speeds to some extent.

5
Run an anti-virus scan on the computer. A virus can negatively affect the Internet's speed so it is important to keep the computer clean. You can download Malicious Software Removal Tool from Microsoft's website (See Resources). This tool will keep a check on your computer for viruses and will remove malicious contents immediately. Consequently, it will help improve download speed.

Download a speed optimizing tool. There are several applications designed for accelerating your computer's download speed. They are particularly helpful when you're downloading large files off the Internet. You can download these download managers from Resources section.
