How to Update Notebook Graphic Cards

Unlike with desktop computers, where you can pull off the case and replace the video card with a standard-sized card, updating the graphics card on a notebook computer can be complex. To upgrade your notebook graphics card, you must disassemble the entire laptop and update the graphics card with one that is both compatible for your system and that will fit in your particular model of laptop. These cards are usually manufacturer-specific.

Unplug the laptop charger and remove the battery. Place the laptop face up on your workspace and open the display screen.

    • 2

Remove the hinge cover above the keyboard using a thin flat-head screwdriver. Insert the flat-head screwdriver around the edges of the hinge cover and pry it off.

    • 3

Remove the screws that secure the keyboard with a laptop Phillips head screwdriver. These screws are located under the hinge cover. Lift the keyboard up and disconnect the ribbon cable beneath it. Ensure that you don't try to remove the keyboard without disconnecting the ribbon cable, or you can damage the delicate keyboard and have to replace it.

Remove the hinge screws securing the display screen with a laptop Phillips head screwdriver. Unplug any cables connecting to the display and separate the display from the notebook. Set it aside.

    • 5

Remove the screw securing the CD/DVD drive and extract the drive from the side of the notebook base. Note that some units have a latch that you must press.

    • 6

Turn the laptop over and remove all screws on the bottom panel with a laptop Phillips head screwdriver. Turn the laptop right side up and separate the top panel from the bottom panel, exposing the internal components.

Locate the graphics card for your laptop and remove the screws securing it in place. Disconnect any cables and extract the old graphics card.

    • 8

Replace the card with the updated graphics card designed to fit your particular notebook. Plug in any cables and secure it with the screws you removed from the old graphics card.

    • 9

Reassemble the notebook computer, following the disassembly instructions in reverse. Ensure that you do not force anything while reassembling the unit or you risk damaging it and requiring replacement.

    • 10

Start the computer and visit the manufacturer's website to locate the most recent drivers for your new hardware. Download the drivers and follow the on-screen installation procedures.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the screws sorted as you remove them. It is easy to get them mixed up and it helps you identify each screw when reassembling the notebook.

  • You can damage the delicate internal components of the laptop if you don't know what you are doing. Don't attempt this project if you are unfamiliar with computer components.
