How to Knit a Baby Carrier

Baby carriers are small, firm slings parents wear to safely carry their infants. These carriers provide support and keep babies warm and secure while allowing parents mobility and free use of their arms. You can purchase a baby carrier, but making your own adds a special touch.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the baby across your chest and measure her. Measure from the baby's toes to the first button on your coat (A).

    • 2

Measure the width of the buttons on your coat (B). Next, measure the baby's width by measuring from each button on one side of your coat to the other side across the baby. Since babies are generally carried on one side of the body, measurements are taken from the button of one side to however long the baby extends to the other side (C, D, E and F).

    • 3

Add two inches to the widest of C, D, E and F to give you the last measurement G. This would be at the bottom of the carrier to allow free movement of the baby's toes.

    • 4

Follow the general pattern---10 stitches in garter stitch and 30 stitches in 2-by-2 rib.

    • 5

Place button holes at appropriate spaces to allow proper fastening of the baby. Use measurements C, D, E and F to create the necessary button holes.

    • 6

Work 4 cms 10 inches into the general pattern. This is the bottom where the baby's toes will be. Work in pattern until measure A is reached.

    • 7

Find two button holes using measurement C. At each place cast off one stitch and yarn over. The pattern should be worked in until measurement B is reached from the first button hole.

    • 8

Make the second button holes with point D in mind. At both places cast off one stitch and yarn over. The pattern should be worked in until measure B is reached from the second button hole.

    • 9

Create the third button holes with point E in mind. At both places cast off one stitch and yarn over. The pattern should be worked in until measure B is reached from the third button hole.

    • 10

Make the fourth button holes with point F in mind. At both places cast off one stitch and yarn over. The pattern should be worked in until the piece measures at least 2 inches 4 cms from the fourth button hole.

    • 11

Weave the ends carefully to give the carrier appropriate finishing.
