Filters keep undesirable pages from loading in Firefox.

When you surf the Web, you have the potential to come across annoying or inappropriate content that makes the Internet less enjoyable. To combat this problem, use a filter to have more control over your browsing. For example, if you have children, consider installing a filter that blocks adult-oriented sites. The Mozilla Firefox Web browser provides you with "add-ons," which are free applications to boost your browser's capabilities. Using the Firefox menu, install the filter add-on of your choice to begin filtering your Web searches.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch your Mozilla Firefox Web browser and click the "Add-ons" option underneath the "Tools" menu.

    • 2

Click the "Get Add-ons" button at the top of the dialog box that displays and then type in the terms "filter" and/or "block" to generate a list of relevant results. Each offering displays a short description of what the tool does. For example, FoxFilter is specifically designed to block pornographic content, while Adblock Plus gets rids of banners and other types of advertisements.

Click on the filter of your choice and then click the "Add to Firefox" button. Follow the prompts to install the add-on and restart your browser.

    • 4

Click the "Preferences" button underneath the filter that automatically appears in the "Add-ons" dialog box. The "Preferences" are where you set up the type of filters that you want your browser to adhere to. If this dialog does not display, click the "Tools" menu and select the "Add-ons" option.

    • 5

Follow the prompts to enter your specific filter preferences. Each process is different, depending on the type of filter that you choose. For instance, Feed Filter presents you with menus that allow you to determine how your Facebook news feeds are positioned and the type of data that they display. Make your selections and then use Firefox as normal to activate the filter.

Tips & Warnings

  • You also have the option to set your filter preferences (Step 3) by clicking the Firefox "Tools" menu and selecting the name of your filter in the drop-down list.

  • If you need help using your specific filter, bring up the add-ons dialog box again (Step 1), type the name of your filter in the text field and then click the "Learn More" link to go to the add-on page. These pages typically have instruction in the form of images and/or video, which describe how to use the tool in detail.
