How to Check Internet Line Speed

How to Check Internet Line Speed thumbnail
Check your Internet speed from your browser.

You might want to check the speed of your Internet connection for several reasons. Although broadband Internet connections like cable and DSL are much faster than dial-up, they are also more expensive. It's a good idea to check your connection speed to make sure that you are getting the speed promised by your Internet service provider. You may also wish to check your speed to ensure it's sufficient for online services, such as gaming and voice over IP.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a speed test website. Many speed tests are available online, all free. Some may require that you sign up for a free account before testing your Internet speed, but most do not. Some of the more popular speed tests include SpeedTest.net, BandwidthPlace.com and CNET Online Speed Test (see Resources).

    • 2

Enter the specified information. Some speed tests may ask for your zip code or for you to select the major city closest to your location. Others may ask that you select a server for the test or enter your type of Internet connection. Complete the required information before beginning the test.

    • 3

Click "Start" to begin the test. The test will check your upload and download speeds. Wait until the test is complete to view the results. You can now compare them to the required speed for the service you were interested in or to the speeds that your ISP has promised.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test your speed during several different times of day. The connection may be slower when many people are online, such as just after work or early in the morning.
