How Do I Lower the Total Alkalinity in My Salt Generator Pool?
Swimming pools are kept clean with regular maintenance and the application of a sanitizer. The most common sanitizer used in swimming pools is chlorine. Chlorine is applied to the pool through shocks and tablets or generated with chlorine or salt generators. Salt generators take salt that is in the pool water and convert it into chlorine, which sanitizes the pool. Over time, salt generator pools naturally acquire high alkaline levels. Test the alkalinity of your pool's water or take a sample to a local pool business for analysis. Acquire the correct amount of an alkaline-lowering chemical, such as muriatic acid, according to your test results or the pool business's recommendations. Generally 1 gallon of a chemical is used per 10,000 gallons of water held in your pool.

Wear protective gloves and open your alkaline-lowering chemical. Pour the chemical into the deepest area of your pool. Run your pool pump for at least 12 hours after the application.

Retest your pool water's alkaline level. Reapply the chemical treatment until the correct alkalinity is reached. The typical safe alkaline level for a salt pool is between 125 and 150 parts per million.

Tips & Warnings
If applying a large amount of chemical to your pool, apply the chemical in several smaller doses over a series of days for a better effect.
Muriatic acid is extremely dangerous. Always wear hand protection when handling the chemical.
