Stay safe by using available hand rails and studying pool steps before climbing them.

Swimming pools are commonly constructed with a set of pool steps installed. Pool steps enable swimmers to enter and exit the pool with ease and provide a safe environment for those that are disabled. However pool steps, if not taken properly, can be dangerous. The dangers associated with pool steps include slipping due to wet steps and misjudging the distance the steps are submerged into the pool water. Pools steps are easily climbed by moving slow and paying attention. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Position yourself in front of the pool steps. Pool steps in the shallow end are easier to climb then those cut into the deep end of the pool.

    • 2

Grab hold of the hand rail if one is available. Carefully place your preferred foot onto the pool steps and test the step for any unusual slipperiness as caused by liquid pool chemicals.

    • 3

Lift your bottom foot up and onto the pool steps, stabilizing yourself with the hand rail if available. Continue climbing the steps carefully until you have reached the outside of the pool.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are disabled and wanting to swim at a local pool, contact the pool by phone or mail and ask if they have specialized features built into the pool to help those that are disabled. Some commercial pools have shallow, safe areas for those that are disabled to enter the pool.
