How to Find Out the Hard Drive Type on Your Computer
Desktop computers have internal space available for adding a second hard drive. There are several different kinds of connectors used on hard drives. Trying to attach the wrong hard drive to the computer can damage it. You can find out what type of hard drive your computer uses by accessing a program provided with the operating system. The procedure is straightforward and does not require any expertise in what kind of connects are used on a hard drive.

Go to the “Apple” menu. Select “About This Mac” from the drop down menu.

Click on the “More Info” button at the bottom of the window that appears to launch the “System Profiler” program.

Click on the “Hardware” tab at the left side of the “System Profiler” program’s main screen.

Click on the icon above the “USB” icon that is above the “Network” tab.

Read the type of hard drive that the Mac is using at the top of the center column. Quit the “System Profiler” program.
Finding Out The Hard Drive Type On A PC

Launch the “System Information” program by selecting it from the “start,” “All Programs” pop-up menu.

Click on the “+” icon on the left side of “Components” in the left column of the window that appears.

Click on the “+” icon on the left side of “Storage” that has appeared below “Components.”

Click on the “Drives” icon in the center column of the window.

Read the type of hard drive that the PC is using in the right column of the window. Press the red “X” in the upper right corner to quit the program and close the window.
