How to Refill a Canon CL-40
Canon's CL-40 is an inkjet cartridge used to provide black ink for Canon's series of home desktop printers. Although many people purchase a replacement Canon CL-40 cartridge, a growing number of individuals refill the empty cartridge from home using an inkjet refill kit. Properly inject your Canon CL-40 cartridge with black replacement ink and avoid spills and malfunctions.

Place the empty Canon 40 onto an even surface so that the Canon label is facing upward.

Locate the small dimpled refill hole on the top of the Canon cartridge just below the label. If you can locate the letter "B" on the label, the refill hole is just below it.

Place the end of the thumb drill onto the dimple, push firmly down onto the cartridge and twist the drill clockwise to begin opening the hole and widening it. Stop when the drill has gone through the plastic and into the cartridge.

Remove the thumb drill and fill your plastic refill syringe with 20 ml of black replacement ink.

Push the syringe all of the way down inside the Canon 40 cartridge via the refill hole.

Hold the cartridge steady in one hand while slowly pushing down on the syringe's plunger to release the black ink.

Slowly remove the syringe from the refill hole and keep the cartridge upright as you return it to the printer.
