How to Repair a Windows XP That Freezes

An installation of Windows XP that freezes at periodic intervals signals something wrong at a base level in the operating system files. While you will not be able to utilize the repair features from within the XP operating system due to the instability of your system, you can nevertheless fix the error with the repair installation feature, overwriting the faulty operating system files with working copies.

Things You'll Need

• Windows XP CD

Instructions

1. Insert the XP CD into your computer and restart the PC.

2. Press any key when prompted to boot from the CD.

3. Press "Enter" at the Welcome screen (do not press "R" here, as you are not trying to access the Recovery Console). Press "F8" at the license agreement.

4. Highlight the drive containing XP and press "R" to repair the operating system, overwriting the faulty files causing the computer to freeze.
