How to Enable SSL in Gmail

Some websites display a padlock sign as proof of SSL technology.

Online security is always a concern, especially when accessing your email account. This is certainly no different if you are a Gmail user. To this end, most email providers, including Gmail, use some form of Secure Socket Layer (SSL). "Web servers and Web browsers rely on the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to create a uniquely encrypted channel for private communications over the public Internet," according to VeriSign. Typically, websites that use SSL are accessed through "https://" rather than "http://." Enabling this feature in Gmail can make your account less vulnerable.

Instructions

    • 1

Log into your Gmail account, and then click "Settings."

    • 2

Scroll to the "Browser connection" section located under the "General" tab, and then select the "Always use https" radio button.

    • 3

Click on the "Save changes" button at the bottom of the page. SSL is now enabled in Gmail.
