VHS was a widely used analog videotape format used to record and play video content. Digital technology has since surpassed older, analog technology for use as a mainstream video format. There are still many VHS video cassette tapes in circulation today. Transferring a VHS tape onto a computer and then burning its contents onto a DVD can easily be done when using the right tools. DVD doesn't degrade as quickly as analog formats such as VHS.

  • VCR
  • Analog-to-digital converter
  • Three RCA cables
  • Video editing software
  • Blank, writable DVD
  • Computer DVD burner
  • FireWire cable

      Hook up the VCR to the analog-to-digital converter box by plugging the red end of the RCA cable into the "Audio Out R" jack of the VCR. Plug the white end into the "Audio Out L" jack of the VCR. and plug the yellow end of the RCA cable into the "Video Out" jack of the VCR. Plug the other end of the RCA cables into the corresponding jacks on the converter box.

      Connect the converter box to your computer by plugging one end of the FireWire cable into the "DV/IO" jack of the converter and plugging the other end into the FireWire port on your computer.

      Turn on the VCR and rewind the cassette to the beginning of your video. Open up your video editing software program and go to the video "Capture" menu. Click "Capture video." Press "Play" on the VCR. The VHS tape will transfer to the video editing program. When the video has ended, press the "Stop" button on the VCR.

      Go to the editing page of your video editor. Click "File," then click "Import" to bring the captured video into it. Click the imported video file and drag it into the timeline. This is the area at the bottom of the editing screen labeled "Audio" and "Video." Click "File." Click "Render." Click "File," "Export" and MP2 as the file format. Click "File," then "Save." Choose a destination location on your computer to save it to.

      Open up your DVD burning software program. Import the file you have saved. Insert a blank, writable DVD into the burner and click "Burn DVD." When the progress bar reaches the end, it will be transferred onto a DVD.
