How to Start an Apple G4 PowerBook in Safe Mode

Save

The Mac OS X operating system powering an Apple PowerBook G4 consists of thousands of files all functioning together. A corrupted or mangled file can cause the operating system to function erratically. Starting up Mac OS X in the “Safe” mode is the first step towards discovering where the problem lies, as it disables all but the most basic functions of OS X. The procedure is straightforward and can be easily reversed the next time the PowerBook G4 is booted up.

  • Press the power button of the PowerBook G4 for a second to turn it on.

  • Press and hold down on the “Shift” key immediately after the start-up tone sounds.

  • Release the “Shift” key once the gray Apple icon appears on the screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • OS X 10.3 and earlier will not display "Safe Boot" in the log in window.
