How to Make a Wi-Fi Antenna Out of a Soda Can

How to Make a Wi-Fi Antenna Out of a Soda Can thumbnail
Cut off a soda can top to make an inexpensive Wi-Fi antenna.

In a few minutes, you can turn an ordinary soda can into a Wi-Fi antenna, guaranteed to boost your current Wi-Fi signal. Wi-Fi, which is short for "wireless fidelity," allows you to connect your computer or laptop to the Internet with a wireless network. Your Wi-Fi router's antenna broadcasts in all directions but can have limitations, depending on where your router antenna is located. For example, if you have your router near walls, the floor or around metal, your router's wireless signals will weaken and you may lose your Internet connection. Boost the signals to your Wi-Fi with a soda can and save time and money.

Rinse out the can thoroughly with water, then dry the can with a paper towel.

    • 3

Make a two-inch cut approximately one inch from the bottom of the can, and then use scissors to cut out a two-inch square hole from the cut.

    • 4

Cut a few pieces of duct tape and place the tape pieces over the rough edges of the top portion of the can.

    • 5

Insert your Wi-Fi antenna router in the square hole you made near the bottom of the can.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can hide the lettering on the soda can by painting the can any color you desire. Use a spray paint made for aluminum.

  • Take your new Wi-Fi antenna with you--its small size can fit in your backpack, purse or laptop bag.

  • Keep the box cutter away from children to avoid injuries.
