How to Learn MS Publisher
Microsoft Publisher, part of the Microsoft Office Suite, is a desktop publishing and design tool used to make a wide variety of publications, such as newsletters, greeting cards, business cards, fliers and banners. Publisher also has the capabilities to create online items such as web pages, and it offers the same familiar interface as seen in many other Office products such as Word. Learning the ins and outs of Publisher is possible through self-paced study or by seeking help from industry experts.

Open Publisher or download a free trial and visit its in-program help center by pulling down the "Help" menu at the top of the screen. Click the "Microsoft Office Publisher Help" link, which opens a search function where you can type a word or phrase and bring up help topics related to that item.

2
Purchase a beginner text, such as "Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 For Dummies" by Jim McCarter and Jacqui Salerno Mabin, "Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 Step by Step" by Joyce Cox and Joan Preppernau, "Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 Illustrated Introductory" by Elizabeth Eisner Reding or "Microsoft Publisher 2007: Complete Concepts and Techniques" by Gary B. Enroll in an online course on Microsoft Publisher. Participating in a distance learning class, which is conducted over the computer on your own time, gives you the opportunity to learn at your own pace. Training sessions such as the one offered by ExpertRating offer a basic introduction to the program, formatting text, creating objects, planning a publication, creating websites and making templates.

Review Publisher tutorial websites, which offer online step-by-step instruction on individual tasks in Publisher. Sites such as In Pictures give tutorials on using templates to create brochures and newsletters, making a document from scratch, how to check spelling, adding tables and getting your document ready for professional printing. Some sites even include short videos you can watch to see just what menu options to select and where to click on the screen.
