Replacing the seal on your GE refrigerator will keep your food fresh.

If you open the door to your GE refrigerator and notice that it's not getting cold anymore, it might be time to replace the seal. The seal traps the cold air inside the unit. When the seal is broken or there is even a small hole, the cold air will escape, which could cause your food to spoil. You don't have to replace the entire unit. You can replace only the seal with little effort yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the GE refrigerator away from the wall. Unplug it from the electrical outlet. Remove all food items from the door shelves.

    • 2

Put your new door seal into an electric dryer for about 10 minutes. Heating the seal will make it easier to install.

    • 3

Start on the left hand side of the door and pull on the old door seal on your GE refrigerator until it starts to come off. Look under the seal to find the retaining bracket that holds the seal on the door.

    • 4

Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws of the retaining bracket. Pull the old seal from the retaining bracket and work your way around the door until the seal is completely off.

    • 5

Use an all-purpose cleaner to clean the area where the old seal was. Dry the area with a dry towel. Push your new seal into the seal groove. Slide it under the retaining bracket. Fit the new seal on the door until it is completely in place.

    • 6

Tighten the screws on the retaining bracket. Plug the refrigerator back into the electrical outlet and allow it to cool. Check that the seal is keeping the temperature on the inside of the refrigerator constant.
