Taking Care of a Pregnant Chihuahua

Taking Care of a Pregnant Chihuahua thumbnail
Pregnant chihuahuas need extra care.

Chihuahuas are a small breed of dog that originated in Mexico. They are more fragile than other dog breeds and tend to have a nervous disposition when stressed, such as during pregnancy. Chihuahuas often attach themselves to one or two human companions and take great comfort in receiving extra attention from these humans during pregnancy. Ensuring good care will help to ensure a healthy pregnancy for mom and healthy puppies at the end of it.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide a soft bed for your chihuahua in a quiet room where there is not a lot of human traffic. If possible, provide several spots so that it always has a safe place to go. Use dog beds or pillows and soft blankets or towels for the dog to lay on.

    • 2

Feed with a high quality dog food that is well balanced. Keep the feeding amount the same until after the sixth week of pregnancy and then begin feeding a half a serving more than usual. Several meals a day is better than one large meal for Chihuahuas since they have tiny stomachs that fill and empty easily.

    • 3

Provide daily exercise but ensure that it is not strenuous. Several short walks or outdoor play sessions will not only keep your Chihuahua from gaining too much excess weight but will also keep it healthy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have your dog examined during pregnancy by your veterinarian. He can diagnose potential problems before they happen and take steps to prevent or treat them.

  • Do not give calcium supplements during pregnancy or when a chihuahua is nursing. Excess calcium can cause a nutritional deficiency and harm your dog. A good dog food will provide all the nutrients needed so that you can avoid supplements.
