Think about what kind of job you're interested in. Brainstorm job ideas that fit your skills and personality, whether in food service, construction, retail sales, office work or another area.

    • 2

Do research. Look online and in the telephone Yellow Pages for employers and jobs that fit the description of the sort of work you want to do. There are numerous websites for job hunting in your local area, including monster.com and groovejob.com.

    • 3

Make sure you want the job. Contact your potential employer and ask what the job entails, pay rates and hours available.

    • 4

Show up. Visit the company or business you want to work for. Look professional and presentable, and don't forget to smile. Ask to speak to the manager so you can arrange an interview. Have your resume with you and leave it with the boss. No matter how the first meeting goes, shake the boss' hand and thank her for her time.

    • 5

Call back. If they don't call you back within a week, call and check on the status of your application. Eagerness is a positive quality in the workplace, but don't call every day.

    • 6

Practice for the interview. Speak articulately and professionally. Let the interviewer know you are her go-to person. Be yourself, and let your personality shine through. Avoid saying "um." If you are ever at a loss for words, ask questions about the business. Show interest in the company.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid bragging about yourself, but don't be too humble. Confidence, and a cool head, are key.
