Fax machines serve as as sort of remote scanner and email client that allows you to transmit documents over a telephone connection. But fax machines can be expensive. Another option is to send faxes with your commputer. There are applications for Apple OS X operating system that allow you to send nearly any file as a fax. This gives you the freedom to fax important documents immediately without owning a machine yourself.

      Download one of the remote-facing applications available for your Apple computer such as PageSender. This particular application will allow you to send .doc, .png, .rtf, .txt. and .pdf documents to a fax machine. Others may differ slightly in the interface but generally they offer the same services and capabilities. As of 2010, Pagesender costs $39.95 to download.

      Install the PageSender application by using the pagersender.dmg file you downloaded and double-clicking on its icon. Follow the prompts to install the program on your Mac. Drag the PageSender icon to the applications file of your hard drive to complete the installation process. Double-click to open the application. Follow the prompts on the program to add fax numbers to the database.

      Open the file that you would like to fax. Look over the document to ensure it looks how you would like it to. If it is editable, make your final adjustments and save it. Go to "File" in the menu bar and click "Print." Choose "PageSender-Fax" when it prompts you to choose a printer.

      Choose the page range you would like to fax, as well as the fax number you would like to send the document to. Click "Print" to send your fax to the intended recipient. Contact the person or business afterward to confirm receipt.
