Local general contractors are required to know the rules and ordinances of the local government. The city of Miami, Florida, has specific building laws due to hurricane hazards and other concerns. Steps are required to become a certified licensed general contractor in Miami.

Instructions

1. Visit the appropriate Miami government offices (see Reference section) to apply for a business license and also to verify any other forms and licenses that are necessary to operate locally. You can also apply for a business license online, using business.gov for specific city license applications and requirements.

2. If you do not already have a Federal Tax ID Number, apply for one. You can apply online on the IRS website.

3. Open a business banking account with a local bank or credit union. A financial statement will be needed to verify the stability of the individual or business that is to be licensed. A bank verification letter will also be necessary to verify funds in the account. Obtain a credit report that includes nationwide information. Also, provide verification of a discharge for any bankruptcies and satisfaction of any liens and judgments.

4. Provide proof of education in accordance with Florida's requirements. They include four years of construction-related coursework and at least one year of work experience, or four years of work experience with at least one year as a foreman. These requirements must be completed before you can be licensed in the state or the city.

5. As a general contractor you will be able to operate from a commercial or residential office as long as you ensure accuracy of the address and phone number on the application. If you are already a state-certified general contractor, you will just need to obtain a local business license. If you are not certified with the state, you must be certified before a local license can be provided.

6. Provide proof of insurance with your state license. The necessary insurance required by the state of Florida is a general liability insurance policy with a minimum of $100,000 bodily injury and $25,000 property damage coverage. You must also obtain worker's compensation insurance or file for an exemption with the state.
