How to Replace Printer Toner

How to Replace Printer Toner thumbnail
Changing the toner is easy.

If you use a laser printer, eventually you will have to change the toner cartridge. You will be able to tell when the toner cartridge needs to be changed because you will notice that the printouts are light and difficult to read. That is because the toner powder inside the cartridge is depleted, and replacing the toner cartridge with a new one will restore the high-quality printing for which laser printers are known.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the toner cartridge cover. On most laser printers, this cover is located either on the left-hand side of the printer or in the front.

    • 2

Locate the used toner cartridge. The toner cartridge is black in color, and it generally contains a large label with the same part number as the replacement cartridge. Grip the top of the cartridge and pull it out of the printer. Set the used cartridge aside.

    • 3

Remove the new toner cartridge from the box and locate any packing materials that protected it in shipment. Most toner cartridges come with a pull tab at one end to release the toner into the cartridge. Pull on this tab and discard it. Many cartridges also come with a piece of tape affixed to the middle of the cartridge. This tape protected the cartridge in shipment, but it needs to be removed before the cartridge is installed. To make it easier to find, many toner manufacturers make these packing materials bright colors, like orange and green.

    • 4

Insert the toner cartridge into the printer, with the label facing you. Push the toner cartridge until it snaps into place, then close the cover. If the toner cartridge is not installed properly, the door will not close.

    • 5

Send a job to your printer and check the quality of the output. If there is nothing printed on the page, remove the toner cartridge and make sure all packing materials have been removed.
