How to Decorate for an Outside Wedding Reception

How to Decorate for an Outside Wedding Reception thumbnail
Decorations can make outdoor weddings more festive.

Many spring and summer weddings are held outdoors to take advantage of warm, beautiful weather. Some outdoor settings for weddings include parks, private backyards, beaches and botanical gardens. While outdoor weddings may have the beauty of nature for a backdrop, decorating can be challenging because there are no walls to which you can attach decor. However, with a little bit of creativity and effort, you can still decorate your chosen wedding spot in a festive manner to help make the setting more personal and special. Use your setting to guide your decorating.

Instructions

  1. Ceremony Area

    • 1

Cover an arch with tulle or organza; white is a commonly used fabric color. Tightly wrap the fabric around the arch, using clear or white clips where necessary. Next, attach real or silk garlands of flowers, vines or plants to the fabric.

    • 2

Decorate the guest seating area with more fabric and flowers. Drape organza or tulle along rows of chairs, decorating every few feet with flowers. Clearly define the guest seating area by making an outline of flowers on the ground around the group of chairs, or make paper bag luminaries if the wedding will be held near dusk or at night.

    • 3

Incorporate the beauty of nature in keeping with the location of the wedding. If you are having a wedding in a botanical garden, display pots of colorful flowers and pine cones. For beach weddings, display beach-themed items like tiki torches, seashells and artificial starfish.

Get a large wire frame for a heart-shaped wreath and decorate with ribbon and flowers and display on a large stand. Craft stores may have pre-made heart-shaped wire frames, or you can buy the wire and bend it yourself into a heart shape.

    • 5

Decorate a bird cage for a wedding card holder. Buy a new brass or iron bird cage and attach silk flowers and a note specifying that guests can place cards in the cage. Tie a ribbon in a bow through the top of the cage. Make sure to get a smaller, more old-fashioned, round bird cage rather than a large, square one.

    • 6

Cover a table with fabric and flower petals with additional flowers in vases and place near the entrance to hold a guest book. Wrap ribbon around a fancy pen for signing the book.
