A tall cardboard box works for crafting an umbrella stand. Using a box cutter, cut the top flaps off a tall slim cardboard box. Cut strips of clear shipping tape with scissors. Tape the bottom of the box closed along with any edges that need to be taped permanently.

2
Insert a kitchen-size trash bag into the box. This will waterproof the inside of the umbrella stand. Tape the trash bag around the top inside of the box. Put the shipping tape over the top edges of the trash bag inside the box and bring the tape up and over the top outside of the box. Press tape securely.

Paint the box in small areas with decoupage glue. Tear wrapping paper into different-shaped pieces and put them all over the box, allowing the torn pieces to overlap each other randomly. Continue working in small areas until the box is covered just to the top outside edge. Paint decoupage glue all over the top of the wrapping paper. Let dry overnight.

Cut a piece of 1/2" rope to fit around the top outside edge of the box. Also cut a piece of rope to fit around the outside bottom of the box. Apply a strip of craft glue around the top edge of the umbrella stand. Put the rope strip in the glue. This will create your top rim. Allow to dry. Apply the second piece of rope to the bottom in the same manner. This rope will edge the bottom of the umbrella stand. Allow to dry.
