How to Know If a New Computer Memory Is Correctly Installed

A computer memory upgrade is usually one of the easier hardware upgrades to perform for a laptop or PC. After ordering and/or purchasing compatible memory strips for the computer to be upgraded, the memory chip bay is located, old memory removed or reseated, and new memory inserted. To know if a new memory chip is correctly installed, check the memory settings listed in Computer Properties. Of course, it helps to know the RAM statistics of the memory chip(s) prior to installation. If all expected memory is being recognized and utilized by the computer, then the memory is installed correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Note the total expected RAM of the memory chips prior to installation.

    • 2

Power off the computer. Install the memory per instructions for the laptop or PC. Replace the memory bay cover once memory is installed.

    • 3

Power on the computer with the new memory in place and allow the computer to boot up into Windows.

    • 4

Click “Start” and then right-click “Computer.”

    • 5

Click “Properties.” The System Properties window will open. Locate the line labeled “Memory (RAM).” The number list here should equal the expected RAM of the new memory chips. If the memory is less than expected, attempt reseating the memory chips into the bay and check the reading again.
