How to Handload the 17 Remington

A bolt-action rifle in which .17 rounds can be individually loaded.

The .17 Remington is one of many outstanding rifles created for target shooting and small game hunting. The .17, which is a slightly larger caliber than the .22, does not create a loud bang when fired, nor does it give the shooter a hard recoil. The .17 Remington bolt-action rifle can hold five rounds with the standard clip. While five rounds can be placed in the clip and chambered with the bolt, the rifle can also be hand-loaded for single-round shooting.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the clip from the .17 Remington rifle by pulling the metal ammunition clip release, which is located in front of the clip, forward. The ammunition clip will reduce the weight of the rifle and prevent jamming from occurring in the chamber.

    • 2

Pull the bolt of the rifle up and back with a quick and efficient motion. This will open the chamber in which the bullet will be placed.

    • 3

Insert a single .17 caliber round in the chamber with one hand, while holding the rifle at a downward angle with the other hand. The copper head of the bullet should be facing toward the end of the barrel. Continue to hold the rifle at a downward angle to prevent the bullet from coming out of the chamber.

    • 4

Close the chamber by pushing the bolt forward and down in one quick motion. Assume the firing position and fire the single .17 caliber round at the desired target. Continue to hand-load each round individually.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never fire the rifle if the bolt is not closed all the way. Jamming may occur if the .17 caliber round falls out of place.
