Protect your canine friend's health by serving it homemade dog food.

Commercial dog foods often have high percentages of filler material such as barley bits and other grain products. Commercial dog foods also contain soy, wheat and corn, which are common food allergies in dogs, according to Dog-Obedience-Training-Review.com. In addition, your dog may be sensitive to food dyes included in commercial dog foods. To avoid these undesirable ingredients, make your dog's food in your own kitchen. Homemade dog food can be tailored to your dog's situation in life, including age, activity level, medical conditions and size.

  • 2 cups cubed meat of your choice
  • 1 cup cubed carrots and sweet potato

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your vet for recommendations on any special dietary requirements for your dog. Your vet can also tell you how much to feed your dog, what foods to avoid and if your dog will need an additional dietary supplement.

    • 2

Adjust the given recipe according to your vet's recommendations. These may include more, less or different varieties of protein, fiber or carbohydrates.

    • 3

Cook the meat and vegetables together in the skillet until the meat is fully cooked.

    • 4

Process the meat and vegetable mixture, eggs and brown rice in the food processor on a "Chop" setting until the mixture is blended but still in chunks.

    • 5

Feed your dog the amount suggested by your vet. Store any extra food in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for up to four days.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always follow your vet's recommendations. He will know what food will best help your dog, depending on your dog's specific situation.

  • Feel free to scale the recipe according to the number and size of dogs you will be feeding. Again, talk to your vet to find out how much food your dog needs.
