How to Refill the Canon PGI-5BK
The Canon PGI-5BK is a black ink cartridge used with Canon printers that can be refilled when the ink runs low. Refilling the ink can be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing new cartridges when they run out. To prevent damage to the cartridge or to the printer, it is vital to follow the proper refilling procedures. Incorrectly refilled cartridges can also cause a reduction in print quality.

1
Cover the outlet hole on the bottom of the cartridge with the orange outlet seal that came with the cartridge. The outlet hole is where the ink is discharged during printing. Use a rubber band to hold the seal in place. Alternatively, the outlet hole can be covered with a strip of vinyl tape.

2
Press on the sealing ball on the top of the cartridge with an Allen wrench until the ball is moved into the cartridge enough to allow a syringe to be inserted.

3
Fill a syringe with 13 ml of black refill ink. Insert the needle of the syringe into the opening created by moving the sealing ball out of the way. Slowly inject the ink into the ink chamber.
-
4
Seal the filling hole with the plug that came with the refill kit. Alternatively, a drop of hot glue can be placed on the hole. Make sure the hole is air tight to prevent ink from spilling out.
-
5
Remove the outlet seal from the outlet hole on the bottom of the cartridge. Replace the cartridge into the printer. Run one to three print head cleaning cycles in the printer to get the refilled ink flowing.
