How to Recognize Employee Performance
Everyone craves recognition for doing a good job. There are several effective ways to recognize employee performance. Taking the time out to recognize your employees will make them feel valued and worthwhile and may make them increase their productivity and commitment to their jobs. Recognition does not need to be anything more than verbal; however, any monetary rewards should be within the rules of your company and state regulations.

1
Single out your employee and heap praise on him in staff meetings. Your recognition may inspire other employees to increase their performance and seek public attention. Give examples showing why the employee is being singled out as this will set the bar for others to achieve.

2
Sponsor contests, such as employee-of-the-month, that include job perks like an award they can post, small gift, parking spot, free lunch and mention in a company newsletter or bulletin board. Award an employee each month that deserves the recognition for her job performance. Announce the winners via email and company newsletter and common area bulletin boards.

3
Provide your employee with excellent performance a "comp" day. Allow him to take an extra paid day off, especially for the employee who has put in extra hours and deserves that this detail be recognized. A day off can benefit and refresh the employee. If a "comp" day is not allowed by your company, let your employee telecommute and work from home once a week for a month if the job description allows.

4
Send your employee a handwritten thank-you card that acknowledges his exemplary performance. This act shows you've taken time out of your schedule to select a card and express your feelings of appreciation. Your employee will value this thoughtful--yet inexpensive to the employer--action.

5
Give a monetary bonus or gift certificate to recognize your employee. This may provide incentive for other employees to perform at their highest level. Everyone loves to receive money, and a gift card to a restaurant or store is a fun and useful reward for the employee. Check with your human resources department before issuing any monetary-related reward to assure it is within company guidelines.
