How to Learn an Irish Flute Tablature
The Irish flute has its roots in England rather than Ireland. Irish flute is very similar to a recorder, which makes it an ideal instrument for beginners. Learning to read Irish flute tablature and play it on the Irish flute takes nothing more than a basic understanding of how the Irish flute works and a fingering chart to tell you where the notes are located.

1
Hold your Irish flute with two hands. The fingers of your left hand should be closest to your face. Place the mouthpiece of the flute between your lips. This is the proper way to hold and play your Irish flute.

2
Familiarize yourself with the notes available on the Irish flute. The most common Irish flute key is D. Cover all six holes of the flute with three fingers of your left hand and three fingers of your right. Your little finger should be extended up and away from the flute. Gently blow into the mouthpiece. This is a D note.

The fingerings are as follows: first five holes covered = E; first four holes covered = F sharp; first three holes covered = G; first two holes covered = A; first hole covered = B; second and third holes covered = C; sixth hole covered = C sharp; holes two through six covered = D.

Read tablature for an Irish flute the same way you read the fingering chart. Irish flute tablature is typically written with a graph that shows six dots. Black dots indicate you should cover a hole; white dots mean you play a hole uncovered.
