How to Replace a Power Window Motor in a 2002 Chevy Truck

The 2002 Chevy truck depends on power window motors to move the window regulator. If the regulator doesn’t move, then the window glass cannot open or close. When you push the window switch, it transmits an electrical signal to the window motor. The window motor then turns, which moves an arm on the window regulator. This mechanical action pushes the window glass up or down, depending on which way you pushed the switch. If the motor fails in your 2002 Chevy truck and you have some basic automotive-repair skill, you can replace the motor yourself in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

• Trim tool
• Phillips screwdriver
• Packing tape
• Socket set

Instructions

1. Remove the window switch bezel by prying it out of the door panel with the trim tool. Turn the bezel over to access and disconnect the window switch wiring harness by hand. Set the bezel aside.

2. Remove the screw behind the bezel with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the screws from the bottom of the door panel, as well as the two on the leading and trailing edges of the panel, using the screwdriver as well.

3. Lift the panel up and off the door by hand. Set it aside.

4. Move the window glass to the top of the window frame by hand. Tape it in place with the packing tape by running a piece of tape from the inside of the glass, over the top of the window frame and down onto the outside of the glass.

5. Unbolt the window motor from the window regulator and the door, using the socket set. Disconnect the wiring harness from the motor by hand and then pull the motor out of the door.

6. Insert the new window motor and bolt it to the regulator and door with the socket set. Plug the wiring harness into the new motor by hand. Reinstall the door panel in reverse of how you removed it and then remove the packing tape from the window glass.
