Homemade Mosquito Trap

Mosquitoes carry diseases and illnesses to humans and animals. Humans can contract West Nile Virus, malaria and encephalitis from a mosquito bite. A mosquito bite can cause heartworms in dogs. Mosquitoes breed in areas where water is standing, so you should make sure there aren’t any areas of standing water around your home. Another way to reduce the mosquito population around your home is to make several mosquito traps, and place them in areas where you have seen mosquitoes.

Step 4

Measure 6 inches down from the top of the 2-liter drink bottle, draw a line around the bottle at the 6-inch mark, and cut the bottle apart at the line. The top part that you cut off will resemble a funnel.

Step 5

Pour the syrup into the bottom half of the drink bottle. Check the temperature of the syrup with the cooking thermometer. It needs to be between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If it isn’t, wait until it cools before moving to the next step.

Step 7

Flip the top part of the bottle upside down, and put it into the bottom half of the bottle. It will fit snugly into the bottle. Duct tape the sides, so it won’t come apart.

Step 9

Set the bottle in a place with mosquitoes, and let it stand. Mosquitoes will go in, but can’t escape. Change the liquid in the bottle about once a month.

Tips & Warnings

  • This container will catch wasps and horseflies using the syrup mixture that you made for the mosquitoes. If you want to catch more of the wasps and stinging flies, mix one can of any sugar-based drink with 1 tsp. of vinegar. The wasps and flies will flock to it, and will get caught inside just like the mosquitoes. If you hang the traps they work well near horse and cattle pens. It will help keep the horseflies off of your livestock.
