How to Test My Connection Speed
Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer varying levels of Internet connection, based on the maximum upload and download speeds. Faster connections cost more. Oftentimes the advertised speed will be the actual speed, in real-world usage. You can easily test your connection speed to ensure that you are getting what you pay for and/or determine if there is an issue with your Internet connection.

1
Open your Web browser and navigate to an online speed testing site. See Resources for testing sites.
-
2
Enter your location. Enter your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Set your type of connection (cable, DSL, T1, dial-up, etc.). Choose a testing location, if prompted. Not all sites will ask for this information. Some sites will determine the information on their own, based on your IP address. Some will only ask for your location or to select a testing location. It is best to choose a testing location closest to your actual location--this is where the test will upload and download to.

Select "Begin/Start Test." The speed test will begin uploading data from your location to the server and then download information from the server to your computer. A progress bar will indicate the time it takes. The test will take only a minute. When the test is finished, it will give you your download and upload connection speeds.

Tips & Warnings
Perform the test multiple times (or using multiple testing sites) to receive an average connection speed.
Avoid running other browser tabs or Internet-connected applications while running the tests, as these can interfere with the results.
