How to Care for the Baby Mynah Bird
Shiny black mynah birds are extremely intelligent creatures that can sing, talk and make a variety of sounds. Baby mynahs need lots of tender loving care. Due to their pink skin and lack of feathers, baby mynahs or pinkies, need constant warmth. Whether raising birds you rescued from the wild or purchased from a pet store, give your babies the best, healthiest start possible.
Things You'll Need
- Cardboard container
- Heating pad
- Paper towels
- Thermometer
- Moist pet food
- Bowls
- Dry food
Instructions
-
Warming
-
1
Poke 1-inch holes in a 2-foot-square cardboard box.
-
2
Place a heating pad on the bottom of the container. Layer the heating pad with a cloth towel or a baby's receiving blanket.
-
-
3
Cover the top of the towel with paper towels. You will change the paper towels daily to keep the box clean.
-
4
Add a thermometer to the box to monitor the temperature. The heating pad should warm the box but not too much. The ideal temperature for the first two weeks is 92 to 94 degrees Fahrenheit. After two weeks, reduce the temperature to 86 to 88 degrees.
Feeding
-
5
Feed the baby every 30 minutes except during the night hours.
-
6
Provide moist food for the bird. Mynah food or moist cat food works fine. Hand feed the babies beginning at 2 weeks only every three hours. At this point, you can add fresh fruit to the menu.
-
7
Put moistened food in a bowl along with a second bowl of water at around 5 weeks. At 7 weeks, begin weaning the birds from moist food to dry food.
