How to Teach Tricks to My Pit Bull Dog

How to Teach Tricks to My Pit Bull Dog thumbnail
Tricks are taught to a Pit Bull using treats as motivation.

Tricks are not a necessary part of training your Pit Bull, however many people choose to teach their dog tricks and Pit Bull owners are no different. A Pit Bull is an intelligent animal and they actually learn quite quickly. The training of a Pit Bull is no different than training any other animal that likes a treat when they do something you want them to do. A Pit Bull will proudly show its tricks, once they have been learned, as long as a treat is involved as a reward.

Instructions

    • 1

Go into a quiet area with your Pit Bull. This could be a room inside or a quiet backyard. There should be no distractions for the dog.

    • 2

Say the command you want the Pit Bull to learn in a gentle, yet firm voice. Teach the Pit Bull with gentle commands such as sit, stay or roll over.

    • 3

Show the dog the action you want it to take, regardless of which trick you are attempting to train. Teaching sit would begin with pushing the dog's backside to the ground, just as teaching a dog to lay down would require getting the dog to actually lay down.

    • 4

Feed the Pit Bull a treat as soon as it begins to do the requested trick at first, not waiting for the trick to be fully completed.

    • 5

Say the same command again and wait to see if the dog will take the required action on its own. Move the dog into the required position if necessary and again feed the dog a treat.

    • 6

Perform the same command, action and feeding of the treat repeatedly until the Pit Bull has learned that command before moving on to another trick.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some tricks will require you to place the treat in a particular location and have your dog retrieve the treat to actually get your dog into the required position. Always follow this quickly with another treat.

  • Never force a Pit Bull to do a trick it doesn't want to do and never scold a Pit Bull for not performing the requested trick. This will only make the Pit Bull more difficult to train.
