How to Make a Paper Origami Knife

Although most people know that you can fold origami paper into cranes, hearts and other benign symbols or animals, origami paper knives can also be made from a square piece of paper. Some origami knives are incredibly complicated, with designs on the handles or even with other tools as you would find on a Swiss army knife. This origami knife is simple enough for a beginner to make with a 6-inch-square piece of origami paper, ideally with a different color on each side.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the origami paper in half to make a triangle with the colored side on the inside. Unfold and repeat to fold a triangle in the other direction, and unfold that one as well. Orient the paper so the two folds run vertically and horizontally.

    • 2

Line up the lower right edge of the diamond with the vertical line in the center of the paper and crease the fold. Repeat this on the left side, so the resulting shape looks like a kite.

    • 3

Fold each of the corners in the center of the paper out so they just reach the edges created by the previous folds. The bottom edges between the colored triangles and the uncolored background should be horizontal.

    • 4

Fold each of the small uncolored triangles now at the points of the kite in and crease along the edge of the colored triangle before unfolding them. Turn the entire paper over so you see only the uncolored side, and fold these small triangles onto the uncolored side along the creases you had just made.

    • 5

Turn the entire paper over so you see only the uncolored side. Fold the two small triangles you had just made on the left and right sides along the creases you see.

    • 6

Fold the left edge in to meet the center vertical crease in the paper. Fold down the top corner of the paper so it meets the center line at the same place as the fold in the middle of the portion you just folded in. Unfold the left edge and refold it so it is on top of the top corner you folded down. Then fold the right edge of the paper in to meet the center line as well.

    • 7

Fold the bottom tip of the origami paper up about 3/4 of an inch. Then fold in the two points that the previous fold created so they meet on the center crease on the tip you just folded over. This creates the tip of the knife blade, and the point at which the paper switches from white to colored is the transition from blade to handle.

    • 8

Fold the entire knife in half along the center crease to finish making the origami paper knife.
