How to Care for Cut Dendrobium Orchids

Dendrobium orchid bouquets will last longer with proper care.

Because of its elegance and color variety, the dendrobium orchid is often chosen as a bouquet for table settings and special occasions. If you receive cut denodrium orchids, it is important to care for them properly to extend their beauty. The proper trimming, container and temperature of air and water all contribute to a longer lasting orchid display.

Things You'll Need

• Sharp knife
• Tall vase
• Warm water

Instructions

1. If your dendrobium orchid cuttings appear to be listless or wilted, submerge them in warm water for 10 to 12 minutes to refresh them.

2. Trim the bottoms of stalks with a sharp knife, preferably while submerging them in water.

3. Select a vase for your cut dendrobium orchids tall enough to support them. Don't risk their stems drooping or collapsing over the side of the vase because they are top heavy with blooms.

4. Fill the vase at least halfway to the top with warm water before arranging your cut orchids.

5. Mist orchids with water once a day to keep them looking fresh.

Tips & Warnings

• If a dendrobium orchid has been cut for use as a corsage or a boutonniere, try to keep its stem in a water tube, or at least refreigerate or keep in a cool place until right before it is to be worn. Take care when affixing it to clothing not to touch the blossom with fingers or pins.

• Keep dendrobium orchid bouquets away from heat sources such as lamps, stoves or direct sunlight.
