How to Put Wheels on a Chair
Every piece of furniture is made more versatile by the addition of wheels, also known in this context as casters. Casters allow furniture to slide around easily, an attribute which is especially useful for chairs, which are more frequently moved around a room than other types of furniture; this is particularly true for chairs that are tucked under tables or desks. Which type of caster you add to the bottom of your chair depends on the width of the chair's legs. Does this Spark an idea?

Adding Casters to Thin Legs
-
1
Turn the thin-legged chair over so that the chair's legs are in the air.
-
2
Drill a hole in the bottom center of each of the chair's legs; use a drill bit which matches the diameter of your stem casters' threads. Drill the hole as deep as the length of the casters' threads.
-
-
3
Screw each of the threaded stem casters into each of the holes in the bottom of the chair's legs. Turn the chair over onto its legs to test the wheels.
Adding Casters to Thick Legs
-
4
Turn over the thick-legged chair so that its legs are easily accessible.
-
5
Place a plate mount caster over the bottom of one leg. Mark the location of the four screw holes in the plate. Repeat the screw hole marking process on the bottoms of the remaining three legs.
-
6
Drill pilot holes that are slightly smaller than the diameter of the casters' included screws into the bottom of the legs, over the marks you made. Attach each of the four plate casters to the bottoms of the legs, using the pilot holes and included screws.
-
7
Turn over the chair and test the legs.
