How to Switch to MSN Hotmail
There are a number of reasons to change your email address. Maybe your old one is unprofessional or the domain is long and difficult to remember. Maybe you just don't like your previous email service. Whatever the reason, making a new Hotmail account is quick. The trick, however, is knowing what to do with your old email address. You don't want to abandon it completely, and fortunately, Hotmail has this in mind.

1
Create a Windows Live ID in order to secure a user name. Go to Hotmail.com and click "Sign up." You will also be able to use other Microsoft services with this ID. The sign up page will ask you to create a user name and password and will ask you to supply private information such as your name, location, gender and birth year. There is also a CAPTCHA--a series of jumbled letters you must decipher and type--to make sure you're not a spambot. Once you click submit, you now have a Hotmail email address.

2
Notify the people you email most frequently that you are changing your email address. This includes close friends and colleagues. Send them a mass-email from your old email address; put their email addresses under BCC so that they cannot see each others' addresses. Explain the switch and include your new email address. Ask them to add your new email address.

Configure Hotmail so that you can receive emails from your old account. There may be a contact that you aren't thinking of or someone you gave your business card to years ago who wants to email you about a proposition. You don't want to miss that email, so you'll want to continue getting emails from your old account. When you log into Hotmail, click "Add an e-mail account" on the left side of the page. Enter your email address and password, and click "Next." You'll have the option to have the emails sent to a separate folder that you can label or go straight to your inbox. When you reply to emails, you'll have the options to reply either as your new email address or your old email address. On the "compose new email" screen, the active email address is listed next to the "From:" box. If you want to change it, click the upside down triangle to the right. This will trigger a drop down menu. Highlight the email address you want to use.
