Making Bird Seed Ornaments
Feeding your backyard birds doesn't mean you have to have an unsightly bird feeder. Bird seed ornaments can be hung inconspicuously in trees and can be made to suit your decorative tastes. This simple project can be done year-round and is an activity suitable for children. Most of the supplies necessary are available in your kitchen and you can find bird seed in most large chain stores.
Things You'll Need
- Sliced bread
- Cookie cutters
- Toothpick
- Basting brush
- Egg whites
- Bird seed
- Cookie sheet
- Oven
- Twine

Cut shapes out of the sliced bread with your cookie cutters, on a flat surface. Discard the leftover bread.

Poke a hole in the bread where you would like to hang your ornament from with your toothpick.

Brush the egg whites on the bread cutout with your basting brush.

Coat the bread cutout with bird seed, by sprinkling it on top and covering all areas.

Place your ornaments on a baking sheet and bake in a 300-degree Fahrenheit oven for five minutes, or until the egg whites have dried completely.

Remove the ornaments from the oven and let cool before you thread your twine through the hole, creating a way to hang your ornament.

Hang throughout ornaments throughout your yard.

Tips & Warnings
Peanut butter can be substituted for egg whites and you will not have to bake afterward. You may want to toast the cutouts beforehand to make them more stable if you choose to use peanut butter.
