Make a child's poncho out of fleece fabric.

Make a fleece poncho to keep your child warm during the winter season or when outside during cool evening hours. The poncho requires no sewing and is simple for the average person to make even if they feel they have no crafting talent. Fleece fabric is available in many colors, thicknesses and designs to please any child. Increase the size of the piece of fleece required to create a teen- or adult-sized poncho.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase fleece in the quantity of 3/4 yard for toddler-aged children and 1 yard for school-aged children. Each quantity of fleece will make two ponchos due to how you cut the fabric.

    • 2

Fold the fleece in half lengthwise and cut along the fold line. Trim the fleece into a square. Use a 27-inch square for a toddler or a 30-inch square for school-aged children.

    • 3

Fold each square of fleece diagonally to create a triangle. Match the corners and pin to hold in place if they slide.

    • 4

Measure the folded edge of the triangle to find the center and mark it with a pin. Measure out 3 inches from the center point on each side and mark with a pin. Measure 3 inches down from the center and mark with a pin or marking pencil.

    • 5

Draw a half circle on the fleece with a marking pencil, using the three outer markings calculated in Step 4 as the start, middle and end points. Use a bowl as a guide if you have difficultly making the half circle even. The complete circle will be 6 inches in diameter.

    • 6

Cut the half circle out of the fabric to create a head hole for the poncho. Open the poncho fabric and lay it on a flat surface.

    • 7

Cut fringe around the perimeter of the poncho at a length of 2 inches and width of 1 inch. Cut the fringe at a width of 1/2 inch to string two to three pony beads on each strand. Secure the pony beads by tying a knot at the bottom of each fringe strand.
