Sand the wood. Use medium-grit sandpaper and work with the grain. Sand the corners and edges of the wood to round them off, giving an aged appearance to the wood. Once the wood is smooth, wipe with a tack cloth to remove all debris.

Apply wood stain. Follow all manufacturer instructions regarding stain use. Apply the stain with a paintbrush following the grain. Allow it to dry.

Paint the entire board in the background color of your choice. Let the paint dry overnight. Sand the entire surface lightly with a fine-grit sandpaper and wipe with a tack cloth. Apply a second coat of paint.

6
Paint the wording. Use primitive stencils as your guide. Place the appropriate stencil on your banner and paint each letter. Allow adequate dry time before removing each stencil and moving on to the next letter. Embellish the area surrounding the wording with painted scroll marks, hearts, stars or in any manner you choose.
